The Independent Church of India (ICI), a prominent evangelical church based in Churachandpur, Manipur, marked a significant milestone in its journey with the conclusion of its 74th Annual General Assembly. Held from 5th to 10th December 2023 at Sakawrdai, Mizoram, this year’s assembly was a vibrant confluence of faith, leadership, and cultural celebration, attracting over 260 delegates from various presbyteries, city churches, and mission fields across India.
The ICI, known for its dedicated efforts in spreading the Gospel throughout the Indian subcontinent, especially in the North Eastern states, has been a beacon of spiritual guidance and social transformation.
It runs various ministries catering to youth, women, children, and music, along with a central choir. These ministries underscore the church’s commitment to not only spiritual upliftment but also social, economic, and educational development in the region.
This year’s assembly was a significant event as it witnessed the election of new leaders for the term 2024-2026. Rev. Lalneikhup Hmar was appointed as the Executive Secretary, a pivotal role in the church’s administration and outreach activities. The assembly also saw the election of three new secretaries: Rev. J. Thanglur, Rev. Lalhmingthang, and Rev. Dr. James Ruolngul, each bringing their unique vision and experience to the church’s diverse ministries.
In a noteworthy transition of leadership, Rev. Dr. J.L Songate ascended to the role of Moderator, taking over from Elder Dr. H.L Liensang. This change marks a new chapter in the church’s history, promising continued growth and spiritual enrichment under new guidance. The Vice Moderator position was filled by Rev. H.B Hluothang, further solidifying the church’s leadership structure.
The General Assembly also served as a platform for recognizing the service of its members. A special Pension and Ordination Service was held on Sunday, the 10th December 2023. Reverends and evangelists who had dedicated years of service were acknowledged.
Full pensions were granted to Rev. Lalrokhawm from the NPT Mission Field, Evan. Ramfangzau from the Assam Mission Field, Evan. L.V. Parkung from the Tripura Mission Field, and Ms. Sailienthang from the ICI Secretariat.
Additionally, medical pensions were granted to Pastor Thangroliana from the Tuithaphai Presbytery, Mr. S. Daniel Lalringnghet from the Hmarbiel South Presbytery, and Evan. Lalropui Khawbung from the NTK Mission Field.
Highlighting the church’s commitment to spiritual leadership, the assembly saw the ordination of new pastors. Aylwin Rammbuotsai Tusing, H.D Ramtharlawm, James Lawrence Darngawn, Jonathan F Tusing, Spurgeon Hmar, Timothe H.Pulante, Ramhluothang Inbuon, and Johny Laldinthar F Tusing were ordained, signifying their readiness to lead and serve in various capacities within the church.
The General Assembly was not just about administrative changes; it was also a celebration of faith and culture. Choirs from various presbyteries, including the ICI Central Choir, Hmarphei Presbytery Choir, Aizawl Presbytery Choir, and Serlui Presbytery Choir, graced the worship services with their melodious hymns and songs. Their performances added a profound spiritual ambiance to the event, uplifting the congregation’s spirits.
A highlight of the assembly was the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the ICI’s songbook, “Independent Kohran Hla Bu.” This centenary edition of the songbook, a cornerstone of the church’s musical heritage, was released by Rev. Lalneikhup Hmar, Secretary of Ministries & Education.
The songbook, which has played a crucial role in the church’s worship services and musical traditions, was honored for its century-long journey of inspiring and uniting believers through hymns and melodies.
Looking forward, the ICI announced that the 75th General Assembly will be held at Sielmat, Manipur. This future event is already generating anticipation among the church’s community, promising another opportunity for spiritual rejuvenation, leadership development, and cultural celebration.
As the Independent Church of India continues its mission of evangelism and social upliftment, the successful conclusion of its 74th General Assembly stands as a testament to its enduring legacy and evolving leadership.
